Kazakhstan’s national airline, Air Astana, have renewed and extended its contract for ARINC’s Type B Messaging and AviNet Airport service. ARINC will now provide a complete connectivity and messaging platform for the airline’s airport applications. The first carrier from Russia, Eastern Europe  Kazakhstan’s national airline, Air Astana was recently awarded the prestigious 4-star rating, Skytrax World Airline Awards and named ‘Best Airline in South and Central Asia’.

ARINC announced that it has installed the new Passenger Processing System, with on-site maintenance and support at Brussels Airport in Belgium. ARINC installed its CUPPS-compliant vMUSE common use solution on nearly 500 workstations. ARINC’s AviNet global networking solution has also been fitted at the airport providing a secure WAN connectivity to the airlines’ host systems.

ARINC have announced the launch of ARINC AviNet® Mail Enterprise Hub (eHub) a New Cloud Based Messaging Service for the Air Transport Community. eHub is a multi-user web-based service that gives the aviation industry a solid messaging environment for all of their communications needs.

eHub has been designed to be easily configured for either a single user or a global user with multiple divisions and departments with varying messaging requirements. Giving users a single interface that supports the full complement of the aviation industry’s messaging formats and protocols including XML, Type X, Type B, SMTP, X400, Fax and SMS. eHub supports multiple languages. Unlike other comparable systems, eHub performs Type B to SMS message delivery.

It offers simple user message management and includes free internal and local message routing, reducing costs to the customer, building on the System as a Service (SaaS) model.

At Helsinki Airport, as at many other airports the automatic border control system was introduced to help ease congestion of passenger processing during peak hours and travellers are swiping their passports themselves at border crossing checkpoints.

This year Helsinki Airport expects more than a million users to pass through its automated system, after it was reported that last year 600,000 passengers walked through at ease. Seppo Parkkinen the Kuopio-based musician travels internationally a dozen times a year spoke about the automatic passport control and said “It is much faster, you don’t have to wait and it works really well.”

Citizens holding biometric passports, of the European Economic Area, Switzerland and Japan can pass through the self-service passport control. Users scan their passport in a reader and later pose for a camera that uses facial recognition technology that compares their features with the digital photo embedded in the passport.

Departure control systems incorporating biometric passport information are becoming ever more affordable and within the reach of most airports. ARINC’s AviNet Airport system is specifically geared towards integration with existing systems and efficient passenger processing.

Currently 70% of Finns have a biometric passport according to Pentti Alapelto of the Finnish Border Guard. By the end of 2016 it is expected that that figure will be 100%. Alapelto explained “We also use the devices to help weed out passengers in cases where we believe someone is travelling with a false document,” as the high-tech readers also offer an additional layer of security to traditional passport control.

With immediate effect, ARINC Direct will exchange information with FlightAware to provide customers with a secure and customized FlightAware interface on ARINC Direct’s website. This will develop FlightAware live flight tracking information and ARINC Direct customers will now seamlessly be able to benefit from access to FlightAware’s live web-based flight tracking and fleet maps, including streaming live flight and map updates, worldwide enroute navigation data and a host of other maps and overlays. Messaging the aircraft, worldwide position and flight plan display, arrival and departure information, flight history and airport delay information are also included.

The current “Track Flights” service on ARINC Direct’s website will be completely replaced with the FlightAware powered tracker. ARINC Direct customers will be provided with worldwide flight tracking on a customized FlightAware display.

Featuring the largest flight tracking website in the world with over three million users, FlightAware was the first in the market to offer web-based flight tracking of private and commercial aircraft, primarily providing services and data to aircraft and airport operators, as well as other aviation organizations to assist in their operations.

CommutAir has chosen the ARINC AviNet Global Data Network Solution to transmit crew Advance Passenger Information to ensure adherence with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) passenger reporting requirements. The new proprietary reporting guidelines were created by CBSA in response to privacy and data quality concerns.

CommutAir said it selected ARINC to create a customized solution that would comply with CBSA’s new Data Acquisition Solution guidelines. On behalf of the carrier, ARINC will perform the required message format and communications protocol conversion to meet CBSA guidelines.

CommutAir is headquartered in South Burlington, Vermont with operations centered in Cleveland, Ohio and Newark, New Jersey. The company provides regular flights into Toronto and between more than 20 cities throughout the Midwestern and Northeastern U.S.

ACARS

ACARS (or Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) is a type of aircraft communication system which was designed by ARINC to replace the VHF voice service (the voice service was used for all communications between aircraft and ground stations before the introduction of data link). The ACARS system was first introduced in 1978. Passenger reservations

Weather data or weather reporting is part of flight operations. ARINC offers the latest weather prediction and reporting services to the aviation industry and airports around the world. ARINC’s Graphic/Text Weather Service (or G/TWS) provides near-real-time graphic and text weather information to flight crew using GLOBALink data link services.

ARINC also provides terminal weather information to aircraft taking off or landing, including precipitation data, gust fronts and wind shear microbursts information within 15 nautical miles of the airport. Flight Planning

Flight planning is the process of describing a proposed aircraft flight and the flight plans produced typically involves two safety-critical components: fuel calculation and compliance with air traffic control requirements. These components ensure aircrafts can safely reach the proposed destination and to eradicate the mid-air collision risks. Appropriate flight planning also minimises the costs of flights by choosing the optimal route, height and speed; and also by minimum on board fuel load for the proposed journey. Flight planning requires accurate weather forecasts to calculate the impact on fuel consumption due to head or tail winds and air temperature.

This week I wanted to focus on how some technologies can make or break an airline. An article that appeared on thehindu.com demonstrated how ACARS has been so important for one airline.

IndiGo has been showing a resounding success, with high seat take up rates and good profit margins whilst its competitors are grounding planes.

Now handling over 1 million passengers each month IndiGo was set up in early 2006 by Rakesh Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia of InterGlobe Enterprises. The success has been attricuted to many actors but Kapil Kaul, regional head, Centre for Asia-Pacific Aviation (CAPA), states that one of the chief reasons for IndiGo’s success is its focus — “on-time performance, clean, neat aircraft, and good service”.

In India air travel is relatively expensive and therefore the key has been to appeal to a customer base on time saving benefits – for this reason a significant delay on a 55 minute flight would be a disaster. IndiGo has carved out a reputation for flawless “On Time Performance”, and an average on-time record of an amazing 90 per cent.

By using ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing And Reporting System), a constant radio and satellite communication between aircraft and ground stations, the airline has maximised it efficiency. Before every departure, an automatic message is triggered from aircraft to control centre and the departure time recorded immediately. Similarly, the moment the flight lands an automatic message is triggered from aircraft to control centre. These timings are recorded “real time” and without human intervention.

There is no doubt that the efficiency of IndiGo set it apart from its competitors in India, and demonstrated the importance of reliable aircraft messaging.

This week I wanted to look at aviation Type B Messaging. Type B messages are kept short using a series of codes depicting the message type and contain certain application data in specific places within the message. The IATA specified standards are so efficient that the 20 million daily messages would fit on a home use memory stick.

Whilst the standard has not changed for some time, the technology we use to send Type B Messages constantly evolves. We heard this week that the latest Esterline PilotView EFB has launched a new processor and is approved for real-time ACARS messaging over VHF-based and satellite services.
