Industry Pioneering Self-Service Bag Drop Solutions OnlineMontreal Trudeau Airport has converted eight of their 17 previously manned baggage desks into self-service bag drop points in a bid to enhance passenger check-in and speed up operations within the terminal.

More passengers will now be able to make use of the common use, self-service bag drop points for multiple airlines baggage on any flight bound for the US. The airport has observed that the new system has already been adopted by almost half the passengers.

Common-use self-service bag drop points have and will continue to revolutionise airline travel worldwide, streamlining the check-in system and helping to create fluidity within the terminal space that has previously lacked the world over.

Maintaining airport security still remains a priority and the common use desks use up-to-the-minute technology to ensure all the bases are touched in this area. While many of us still check-in online and an increasing number check-in at off-site locations, the self-service bag drop desks offer airlines and airports greater use of terminal space and staff to ensure that the passenger service and experience is better than ever.

Solar Impulse Will Make Aviation History The first day and night, solar powered aircraft is expected to land in India in April 2015 amid much excitement, approximately one year after it is officially unveiled. The record-breaking expedition will take approximately three months with actual flight time of around 20-25 days.

It is not yet clear where Solar Impulse will land in India, but it is hoped that two landings will be made on the west and the east coast.

“Solar Impulse will land in India in April 2015 and will be the first ever day and night-abled solar powered aircraft to do so,” Solar Impulse CEO Andre Borschberg said. “Solar Impulse that weighs 2,740 kg is an attempt to push the envelope as far as research and innovation are concerned in areas such as renewable energy and materials research. It is also a powerful educational tool, encouraging young minds to unleash their imagination.”

Powered by 12,000 solar cells and no fossil fuels, the aircraft reaches high altitudes during daylight hours to enable it to glide at night, covering long distances as it slowly descends.

The amazing Solar Impulse is the first aircraft in history to fly solely under the power of the sun and can reach speeds of up to 70km per hour. Built in Switzerland, the manufacturers have harnessed the latest technology which they plan to showcase around the world.

Mr Borschberg is proud of the opportunity to illustrate the potential of modern technology and said that if it can be used effectively within an aircraft, the potential for use on the ground will be clear.

Reliable & Efficient Real Time Weather Data SolutionsFor the first time, pilots in India will be able to gain online access to real-time weather data thanks to the Aviation Weather Observation System (AWOS) that was rolled out at Juhu Airport by IMD Mumbai.

This will now offer pilots a much-needed update to the system of weather warning, as the new system will continuously monitor weather conditions and, using the new air traffic control tower wifi, information on weather conditions will be relayed to pilots via hand-held PC’s.

The system will now give pilots real-time weather data regarding conditions of visibility, wind patterns, temperature, pressure and types of clouds in addition to advance weather warnings through a wireless capability of a range of 50 nautical miles.

The system will come into its own during monsoon season, during which visibility is most commonly affected. “It is a great leap in aviation meteorological forecasting,” said Deputy-Director General of meteorology, IMD Mumbai, K S Hosalikar, and said that the AAI had granted clearance for the installation and for the operation at the required frequency.

The rollout of the greatly enhanced system will be the first time that pilots in the area have had access to such up-to-date information as real-time weather data. It is expected that safety and operational productivity will show considerable improvements.

Aircraft Maintenance Messaging Solutions ProvidersBintan Island, a 1,030 sq kilometer island off the coast of Singapore in the Riau Islands province could soon be home to a new aircraft maintenance hub with plans to develop tourism and industry to the area. The plan is part of a joint venture between Singapore-based Gallant Venture investment firm and Garuda Maintenance facility AeroAsia.

The companies are committed to the venture, having signed a ‘memorandum of understanding’ only last week at the Singapore Air Show. They said that the island’s existing airport is large enough for the development of a multi-terminal facility with two runways.

The plans include the stationing of Emirsyah airlines regional fleet in Bintan which will enable the venture to target tourism and the business industry.

Aircraft maintenance will form a large part of the new venture, recognising the importance of a dedicated maintenance facility in the area. Increasing Efficiency of Airport Security Screening TechniquesA team comprising of representatives from the Canadian airport authorities and airlines has been formed to conduct a study with an aim to speed up the process of airport security screening. The Airport Pre-Board Screening Efficiency Team will focus upon ways to improve the speed of airport security screening without compromising the security of passengers.

In 2012, more than 51 million passengers, at 106 checkpoints and 311 screening lanes were screened by 5,400 screening officers at Canada’s airports; an improvement of 30% compared to 2010, from 90 to 120 passengers per lane, per hour during peak times.

Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Minister of Transport said, “I trust the Airport Pre Board Screening Efficiency Team will find efficiencies that can be implemented without undue cost to Canadian travellers. Transport Canada will provide appropriate supports to this team.”

Benefits of Web-based Airport Hub CommunicationsBritish Airways has had a major rethink over its airport hub communications in a huge cost-management exercise at Heathrow.

After the events of 9/11, the entire aviation industry experienced a hard-hitting profit drop as airport operations were severely affected. To avoid fines and spiralling costs, it is critical that airlines manage to facilitate smooth and reliable airport operations, enabling fast turnaround times and fewer ground delays.

Therefore it is crucial to maintain reliable airport hub communications, especially during take-off and landing over a range of up to 200 nautical miles.

Reliability is everything. The BA ground-to-air radio system is made up of multiple radio base stations distributed around Heathrow using leased lines. The challenge for the airline was to reduce and manage airport hub radio costs, while maintaining the critical reliability that cannot be compromised.

Also, BA were faced with the problem of continuity while the upgrades and switching were taking place. As the largest carrier out of Heathrow, there was certainly no question of grounding aircraft. It was necessary to ensure the new network was set up and ready to go before the switch, which could be a costly endeavour if an entire framework had to be ready.

The answer for BA was the deployment of ground-to-air radio via IP (RoIP). This also allows for expansion, which the previous system did not, already being at almost ‘full’ capacity.

Employing Twisted Pair’s solution, WAVE, has transferred the RoIP to desktop PC’s and server infrastructure, offering a streamlined alternative, seamlessly efficient and brings cost-optimal airport hub radio communications to the fore.

Lee Weatherley, voice and video solutions manager at British Airways said, “Our network convergence project was primarily focused on streamlining the management and provisioning of telephony services throughout the company. We are now exploring ways to exploit the new network to support other forms of communication—for example, we also operate paging, TV, video conferencing and CCTV over our IP network.”

BA operators are now able to communicate to Smartphones and devices, PTT networks and radios from any WAVE-enabled PC across an entirely secure network. Communications history is easily saved and revisited and communications can take place across multiple channels simultaneously, improving the system, managing operational costs and streamlining the process of airport hub radio communications.
