Automated Border Control Enhances Screening and Passenger Experience | Business Aviation NewsA new automated border control system is now in operation in the Caribbean at Curacao International Airport.

The new system will speed up passenger processing as the airport traffic increases significantly, with self-service gates and real-time passenger data checks, including background screening and API.

The system, provided by Vision-Box, implements an intelligent Passenger Flow system with graphical interfaces for a user-friendly experience.

Other providers of automated border control systems across the world are also experiencing a surge in requirement of self-service and automated passenger processing and screening systems as the need for greater security increases. Improving passenger experience is also high on the list of priorities for international airports on a global scale.

eborders technologyThis years’ Passenger Terminal Expo, held in Cologne, Germany, promises to showcase automated border control solutions to further enhance aviation security, yet continue to streamline the passenger experience.

Secunet and Veridos, German security providers, will be in Hall 10 with their EasyPASS solution.

The benefits of automated border control are far-reaching, with advantages to be realised on both ‘sides’ of the gate. Installing an automated system, border officials and agencies are able to focus their efforts on those passengers that require additional security checks, while airports enjoy an expedited passenger processing system to increase efficiency throughout the terminal environment.

The experience is also enhanced for passengers, who can pass through the check-in and security process far more quickly, reducing queueing time and creating a more flexible environment for travellers.

Other providers of automated border control solutions, such as Rockwell Collins’ e-borders, continue to use the latest technological advancements to enhance flexibility while maintaining a higher level of security for airports all over the world.

UK Borders Security Scheme Criticised | Business Aviation NewsThe UK’s Home Office has been openly criticised this week over the e-borders scheme, which was besieged by problems since it was launched in 2003, last year ending its current form, which proved to be completely ineffective.

The borders scheme, costing around £830 million originally intended to collect passenger data and perform analysis on all travellers arriving at and leaving the UK’s airports and seaports.

Many of the criticisms are regarding not only the spending acceleration of the project, but also its failure to meet its targets, with an estimated 20% of booking data being collected, compared to the 100% original target figure. Advance Passenger Information collection in September of this year was at 86%.

The original contract for the provision of the e-borders technology was cancelled, and a subsequent £150 million settlement was paid out-of-court.

While the system has been upgraded, the original e-borders scheme is way overdue, with an estimated completion date now set at around 2019, eight years past the intended deadline.

E-borders technology improvements all over the world are proving successful in the ability to track the movements of terror suspects and to minimise the risks to national security. The latest developments offer solutions using biometric data and self check in.

The UK Home Office maintain that despite the delays and problems with the implementation of the new e-borders system, all arrivals on UK shores are checked against national watch lists.

Electronic Borders Technology for Effective Passenger Screening

A Credential Authentication system is to be installed at major U.S. airports for screening passenger information in place of visual inspection. The seven-year, $85 million contract has been awarded by the Transport Security Administration (TSA) and will read multiple security features contained within passenger identification documents to ensure that it is genuine.

MorphoTrust is a provider of identity solutions and will undertake the contract for the TSA. “MorphoTrust E-CAT is the culmination of many years of work to address airport security requirements following the 9/11 tragedy, while simplifying travel for American citizens,” MorphoTrust CEO Bob Eckel said. “It is also just the beginning of our vision for what’s possible in air travel, creating a future in which passengers can move easily and securely from the curb to the gate without boarding passes or security lines.”

Other Innovations in Border Security ControlDubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) this month hosted Intersec 2014, with emaratech, the technology and management consulting company owned by the Investment Corporation of Dubai, taking centre stage with its innovative and forward looking border control solutions dubbed “Intelligent Travelling.” Thani Alzaffin, Director General and Board member of emaratech explained that the company had partnered with SRI to produce a suite of technologies, “demonstrating robust security screening and innovative border control solutions.”

IRIS on the move technology (IOM) offers the potential to deal with increasing passenger numbers; reducing both the time it takes to pass through border control and the solving the problems associated with attempting to identify passengers in a busy or limited environment.  Offering non-contact technology, the simple walk-through design of the IOM PassPort SL is able to capture both dual-iris and facial images, without a requirement for the passenger to stop.

Similar benefits can be readily applied to vehicle access points with the IOM PassThru™Drive-up Iris Recognition System, which can replace RFID cards, and can link drivers immediately to their known identity, with the added advantage of being able to record events. In fact emaratech believe the system will become increasingly popular for identification management in many high-traffic environments, including general transportation, employee access and public events.

Electronic Border Management Solutions ProvidersUnder the Capacity Building for Border Management (CBBM) project, Tanzania introduced a biometric e-border management system for residence permits, with an aim to capture biometric samples from the applicants, when registering their data in an electronic database.

The system is based at the Immigration Department Headquarters in Dar es Salaam and is customised to the specific needs of Tanzania.  The new system will increase the speed and efficiency of the entire process reducing instances of human error and will result in an automated, paperless application process.

Funded in a joint project by the EU and UN Tanzania, Japan International Co-operation Agency, Refugees and Migration (PRM), the US State Department’s Bureau for Population and Servico de Estrangeirose e Fronteiras (SEF) it is hoped that the electronic border management solution will improve border security and streamline operations within the two-year project.

The immigration departments of the participating countries have received extensive training during the project for migration and health, identity and data management, counter trafficking and security documentation, in addition to the training received during workshops on the concept of the One Stop Border Post (OSBP), electronic border management information system and on standard SOPs

The Principal Commissioner of Immigration Service said, “Tanzania immigration department has been waiting for a long time to have such a system, which will considerably improve our ability to deliver an efficient and fast service to our customers.”

The implementation of the electronic border management system is amongst the last aims of the CBBM project, which has been targeted towards the establishment of an efficient and secure borders information management system across the borders of Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Malawi.

chi-speedy-passport-process-coming-to-midway-2-001Chicago Department of Aviation announced last week that Chicago Midway Airport will soon implement the same speedy passport process as O’Hare Airport did earlier this year.

The fully automated passport control is all about moving passengers quickly and safely through border clearance processes with the ability to enter information at a self-service kiosk.

This eliminates the filling in of paper customs declaration forms in the U.S., instead scanning passports and answering question on a touch screen.

Photographs are taken of each passenger at the kiosk and, once the verification questions and customs declaration are completed, then a receipt is printed to present to the customs officer.

The system is designed to speed up the entire process of passenger processing, not just in the US, but across the world too.

European countries, such as France are expanding the self-service idea, with many airlines utilising vMUSE and CUTE self-service systems, with many aviation companies placing a direct focus upon these emerging markets.  ARINC, for example have launched a French language site for their electronic and automated borders solutions.

 

electronic border managementChicago O’Hare International Airport officials have announced that they will be launching an Automated Passport Control Programme to help passengers take more control of their journey by using self-service kiosks to speed up the US border clearance procedure and streamline operations with electronic border management.

“This technology reinforces Chicago’s leading position as a world-class destination for business and leisure travellers while spurring economic growth and smartly improving our nation’s security,” said Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel.

The new procedure for electronic border management became operational in Terminal 5 at the beginning of July and is open for free use to all US passengers arriving at Chicago’s O’Hare.  During the first month, the average waiting time over peak periods has been reduced by 16 minutes or an impressive 33%.

The introduction of the electronic border management system means that US passengers can proceed directly to the self-service kiosks to input their information, rather than filling in the paper Customs forms.  They can scan their passports and answer standard questions electronically using the user-friendly, touch-screen interface.

Self-service kiosks are also used for check-in operations around the world and are saving airlines, airports and passengers time and ultimately money with streamlined passenger processing and increased operational efficiency.  Companies such as ARINC Inc, provide cost-effective solutions for global travel improvements.
