Operational Messaging & Communication Infrastructure SolutionsThe communications infrastructure of Gatwick Airport is set for a major overhaul to replace vintage 1950’s technology for the latest cloud-based communications services.

Gatwick is the UK’s second largest airport serving an ever-increasing passenger list of 34.2 million every year.  The project will vastly improve passenger services in addition to 2,500 airport end-users and commercial customers, while reducing costs as staff will be given access through any device.

A five-year contract to upgrade and revamp the communications infrastructure will be carried out by Xchanging, with support from Cisco and Fujitsu.

The aim is to understand the communications infrastructure with a heavy focus upon making Gatwick a key contender, not just for the UK, but for Europe as a key choice.

Michael Ibbitson, CIO of Gatwick airport said, “ By adopting this new approach, we will be transforming the way our staff operates – video conferencing with each other, for instance and working from home effectively during snow days.  This slicker operation will have a significant impact on passenger experience which is what we are always striving to improve.”

The project began earlier this autumn and has a hosted voice and collaboration service.

It is critical for communications infrastructure to understand the messaging needs of an airport and operations to ensure maximum benefits and operational productivity.  Consultancy providers are worth their weight in this respect.

It has been announced that the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) plan to look at what are deemed as unnecessary bureaucracy regulations within the UK general aviation industry this week.

The GA Red Tape Challenge, launched in April, includes proposed changes by the CAA which have been suggested by GA industry stakeholders and operators, in the hope that a deregulation of certain aspects of the industry will be affected.

It has been said by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) that the Department of Transport in the UK can start to apply the same safety requirements expected of commercial aviation to non-commercial under EU regulations for the fitness and performance program (REFIT).  The CAA will be looking for clarification of the regulatory conditions for GA aircraft.

Robert Goodwill, aviation minister for the Department of Transport said, “General aviation is an extremely important sector of UK civil aviation and it is right that we do everything possible to enable it to thrive. That includes making sure that, where appropriate, we ease the burden on what are often smaller operators and businesses who find navigating a complex regulatory framework particularly challenging.”

“We are absolutely committed to improving the way we regulate GA. We have made a start, for instance deregulating in some areas and delegating responsibilities in others. But there is much more we can do,” said Dame Deirdre Hutton, chairman of the CAA. “The new, dedicated GA Unit is a formal recognition that GA needs a different and less onerous regulatory regime to commercial air transport.”

In the US, similar reforms are being proposed by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, who are awaiting decisions to be made by the Senate in relation to smaller aircraft and the FAA’s regulatory conditions for the category.

WINGX-October-2013 (1)October 2013 was the worst recorded month for European business aviation since October 2006, showing a 2.1% decrease in activity, according to WINGX Advance monthly report.

The number of Charter flights dropped by 3.5% year-on-year, which amounted to 800 fewer flights made on business jets than there were in October 2012.

There were a few regions that experienced growth; however, with Greece growing by 14% and Turkey growing by 3%, Italy reported a small increase, and Portugal the highest at 16%.

The Global Express from France’s Bombardier, was the most used aircraft, closely followed by the Citation CJ4, the King Air 350 and the Phenom 300.

Satellite Data LinkAt the National Business Aviation Association convention last month in Las Vegas, satellite data link solutions providers, Latitude Technologies announced it has begun the process of achieving certification for its Future Air Navigation System (FANS) data link transceiver.

The system will transmit real-time satellite data link communications of safety services data over and via the Iridium satellite network.

Aviation Weather for Essential Flight Support ServicesIn a project sponsored by the National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Meteorology Dept is planning to conduct a two-week flight safety research program with the University of Wyoming King Air.

The King Air is a research aircraft that provides atmospheric measurements and flight safety data.  Students from different courses will have direct involvement with instrument system training, flights; flight forecast simulations and will produce the follow-up analysis.

Flight co ordination research will be discussed in open seminars attended by the King Air pilot and scientist and will cover many topics from FAA regulations to forecasting requirements for flight safety data.

The students will maintain awareness of electronic sensor systems and the importance of mission-critical messaging for transmission of flight safety weather data.

Entire infrastructure can be based upon ensuring crucial data is delivered efficiently and swiftly to facilitate safe conduct of flights on a global scale.

Flight safety weather data monitoring forms a huge part of flight support services in commercial, military and business aviation.

Global Connectivity with ARINC eHub Solution for Airports

ARINC Inc announced today that its airport solution, AviNet Airport, through the enterprise hub (eHub) is in use by over 100 airports across the world.

High Frequency Data Link (HFDL) for AviationSyberJet Aircraft acquired the rights to the SJ30 light twinjet aircraft in 2011 and moved production to Utah.  Honeywell agreed to provide the upgraded avionics and production is set to get moving again.

Honeywell’s new avionics system will include SmartView flight display and moving map plus dual FMS with many additional features including graphical flight planning, weather radar charts and maps and electronic checklists.

The system will support FANS/1A, controller pilot (CPDLC) and High Frequency Data Link (HFDL) operations as customer-specifications, in addition to SATCOM, flight data and cockpit voice recorder.

An SJ30 test aircraft will be outfitted with the new avionics and SyberJet expect it to make its first flight in early 2014 with a view to certification being attained by the end of next year.  The jet will feature a new interior, currently being worked upon, to include extra seating, while reducing weight even further.

The Jet, which may be marketed for $7.25 million, will be equipped with passenger cabin services for in-flight entertainment and an information system that will allow access from personal devices, such as Smartphones or iPads.

SyberJet General Manager Mark Fairchild said “Our new management is very conservative,” he said. “We want to under-promise and over-deliver,” when asked about delivery schedules.

The SJ30 was originally the GulfJet and was designed by Ed Swearingen in the late 1980’s.  Since its certification in 2005, the SJ30 has been owned by several companies before being acquired in 2011 by SyberJet.

Germany-based Spherus Aviation, a leading business aviation firm from Hannover, has scheduled a follow-up trip to Nigeria with a view to developing business aviation in the country.
