Munich Airport Aims for Carbon Neutral Status by 2030 | Business Aviation BlogGermany’s Munich Airport has detailed a €150 million plan to reduce its carbon emissions directly by 60% over the next 17 years.

The Bavarian State Minister for Finance, Regional Development and Home Affairs, Dr Markus Soder said, ‘With this target we are underscoring the enormous importance attached to climate protection by the airport and the Bavarian state government.’

Dr Soder, who is also chairman of the supervisory board for Munich Airport, is keen for the airport to become a ‘trailblazer for all of Germany.’

The plan contains many fine details, including increased reliance of renewable energy sources, electromobility within the vehicle fleet, LED runway lighting and intelligent control technology.

Dr Michael Kerkloh, CEO of Munich Airport, spoke during the launch of the CO2 strategy of the continuation of the current efforts the airport already makes towards climate protection, ‘As Europe’s first five-star airport, we also set very high standards for climate protection. With our far-reaching climate targets, we want to help ensure that the airport’s operations and ongoing development are pursued in ways that preserve the opportunities and possibilities of future generations.’

The remaining 40% CO2 emissions will be offset at regional level against certified projects.

The airport management system at ATL will assist the operators and ground personnel to streamline operations, increasing an already efficient system even further.

“Atlanta has continually seen a decrease in delays and improved overall operational performance since deploying Aerobahn in 2010,” said Paul Meyer, Airport Assistant General Manager for Operations. “These achievements are possible due to the airport-wide collaboration fostered by the airport community through the use of a common surface management system.”

Airport Processing Technology - In-Cloud SolutionsAmadeus, European technology firm, has revealed their latest airport platform, designed to focus upon next-gen passenger processing and integration for airport operations.

The common-use system will bring cost effective solution for airport management with an opportunity to lower operational expenses, improving flexibility with simplified messaging and passenger processing capabilities.

With the cloud-based software-as-a-solution (SaaS) system, airlines and ground based operations are able to share both space and resources without costly hosting, development or infrastructure expenses.

Airport Operations Management ProvidersA major shake-up has seen Tulsa International become independent from the City of Tulsa in a move, initially approved by Mayor Dewey Bartlett, that has now been officially agreed by Tulsa Airports Improvement Trust (TAIT).

The agreement will now give the airport more freedom for airport operations management, although, the city of Tulsa will retain control of the airport through TAIT board members appointed by the Tulsa City Council, Tulsa Airport Authority will now lease the airport from the city on a 25-year term.  This will allow it to contract out or hire in for services such as legal, IT and human resources support which were previously provided by Tulsa City which was then reimbursed by the airport. However, some services will continue to be provided by the city and Tulsa International’s 150 employees will remain on their current pension plan.

Passenger numbers at Tulsa International declined 0.3% to 1.316 million in 2013, with an overall decline of 18.5% since 2007. This decline is set against an overall operating budget of $58.5 million in 2013, though airport officials believe the leasing arrangement will enable them to make savings of $500,000.

Exciting Airport Applications Through TechnologyAn industry group has been founded to bring together resources and services for the planned Taoyuan aviation city project with an expected completion date of 2030.

The enormous project will be funded in a collaborative move by the government and the private sector, who expect to invest $16.7 million, making this the largest investment with the highest expectation in recent years, according to Premier Jiang Yi-huah.

The group, The Taiwan Intelligent Aerotropolis Association (TIAA) was founded last week at an official ceremony.  The President, Lee Yen-sung, who is also chairman of Chunghwa Telecom Co. said, “The association is aiming to build a national gateway with smart technologies.”

The TIAA has five groups who will focus upon technology applications, smart airport applications, regulations, information, communications technology infrastructure and promotion and must provide the government with a report next year, then a proposal within two years on the competition, cooperation and ultimately, the development of the aviation city.

Chunghwa Telecom plans build a cloud-computing centre with numerous 4G base stations.

The project is estimated to be capable of generating more than 300,000 jobs upon completion and economic benefits could top almost $67 billion for surrounding areas.

Interest is understandably high in the project, and the TIAA now has over 70 members from 21 members in October.
