vMUSE_MexicoThe industry-leading Common Use Passenger Processing System (CUPPS) from Rockwell Collins’ ARINC airports, ARINC vMUSE, has been selected by Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA) for implementation in eight Mexico airports in a bid to streamline check-in processes, gate services and resource management.

Using vMUSE, the airports can make the most of existing infrastructure, and enable sharing capabilities for multiple airlines. This gives another layer of flexibility for airport operations and enhances passenger experience simultaneously, due to reduced queueing instances and greater management of peak flow passenger traffic.

Lufthansa Select vMUSE Mobile | Business Aviation NewsRockwell Collins’ new ARINC vMUSE mobile passenger processing platform will be launched by Lufthansa as they become the first airline to implement the technology.

This latest innovation in passenger processing promises to speed up the check-in process, which can be carried out by personnel on the ground using tablet devices, wherever they can get an internet signal and connection, even in the hotel foyer.

ARINC vMUSE mobile is based on an entirely mobile common-use passenger processing system (CUPPS) and is the first of its kind in the industry. Enabling cost-sharing and space-saving in the terminal, the solution paves the way for greater flexibility within the airport environment.

Find Out More About Other Bag Drop Systems ProvidersPassengers flying with Asiana Airlines and Korean Air will now be able to utilise the benefits of a self-service bag drop system launched at South Korea’s Incheon International Airport.

The new technology will enable passengers to scan their boarding passes and attach their own baggage tags, eliminating queueing at traditional check-in desks. Baggage will then pass into the automated system for transfer to the aircraft after weighing, scanning and measuring.

The service, which is the first of its kind to be introduced to South Korea, will help to streamline the passenger processing system, saving time and costs with a reduced need for dedicated check-in desks. Incheon has deployed the system in partnership with SK Telecom, G-antech and Type22. Other global providers of bag drop technology include ARINC with their ExpressDrop solution.

The companies have been long-standing partners through the Rockwell Collins acquisition of ARINC last year and have agreed to closely collaborate to continue the IIAC pursuit of innovative products and services with a view to enhancing and streamlining the passenger processing sector of the airport.

Rockwell Collins will also be integrating the well-known ARINC vMUSE platform in addition to baggage handling solutions at the airport. Airlines will quickly utilise the benefits of common use platforms to enable cost-sharing and multi-airline functions of the systems.

“Incheon has thrived by using the latest and most innovative technology in all stages of the passenger journey, from check-in to immigration, and Rockwell Collins’ ARINC suite of products has played a major role in that over the years,” said Seong Kag Hong, vice president, Aerodome Division of IIAC. “This MoU is a natural progression in our relationship and will result in new solutions for the airport going forward.”

Other Bag Drop Solutions ProvidersRumours are circulating that the aviation arm of John Menzies, the newspaper and magazine distributor, could take over from baggage handlers Swissport at Gatwick Airport if a repeat of last months’ baggage fiasco occurs.

The airport was forced to apologise to hundreds of passengers who were told to go home empty-handed because of what was later described as a ‘failure to meet service levels’ by Swissport.

Following the debacle, Monarch Airlines cancelled two Swissport contracts at Gatwick and Manchester, while International Consolidated Airlines said it will ‘look at other opportunities’ should the delays continue.

John Menzies provides cargo and passenger ground-handling services, including ticketing, check-in, baggage reclamation and passenger lounge facilities, which makes up two-thirds of its current aviation business revenue. There is no doubt that share prices would make a dramatic increase should they take over from Swissport as Gatwick and Manchester airports baggage handlers.

Airport Processing Technology - In-Cloud SolutionsAmadeus, European technology firm, has revealed their latest airport platform, designed to focus upon next-gen passenger processing and integration for airport operations.

The common-use system will bring cost effective solution for airport management with an opportunity to lower operational expenses, improving flexibility with simplified messaging and passenger processing capabilities.

With the cloud-based software-as-a-solution (SaaS) system, airlines and ground based operations are able to share both space and resources without costly hosting, development or infrastructure expenses.

Baggage Handling Systems in AirportsA new self-bag drop baggage handling system is to be installed in the newly completed phase of the terminal 3 building of Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Airport in a project expected to be commenced early next year with a completion date of June 2015.

The new baggage handling system is a part of the remodelling of the airport terminal 3, which has shown major growth over the past 4 years since opening its doors on the first phase in 2009.  The airport, on the island of Java is the main airport serving the Jakarta area and had an original capacity over 3 terminals of 38-million passengers.  The busiest airport in the Southern Hemisphere, further growth is expected to surpass 2012’s figures of 57.8 million per year.

Vanderlande Industries is a part of the winning consortium for the project and will consist of 24 automated self bag drop points in the departures check-in area, 108 check-in positions over 12 rows, screening machines and automated transfer systems.  Phase two will see extra self-bag drop and early bag storage facilities.

The new baggage handling system at the airport will greatly enhance passenger processing and create a smoother experience for passengers as a result.

ARINC EMEA has marked a major milestone at Dubai International this week being the first global site to use vMUSE for a total of 34 international airlines, all newly certified to run over Windows 7.  This list includes Emirates airline, which use their Mercator Airport Control System (MACS) with ARINC’s passenger processing vMUSE platform.

vMUSE Solutions Milestone at Dubai InternationalA new five-year agreement was signed between ARINC and dnata in 2012 for the upgrade of the iMUSE to the latest vMUSE version of the platform.  ARINC provided the software, Emirates the hardware, offering an advanced Virtualised Dual Core solution that has delivered a balance for Emirates between technology and cost.

vMUSE is also being utilized to support multiple airports from a common infrastructure. Graham Parker, Manager Business Technology ‐ dnata Airport Operations and Cargo said, “With vMUSE live at Dubai International, we have begun the rollout at Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central for the passenger terminal opening in October.”

ARINC are directly focussing on the growth from emerging markets in the Middle East and now have a site in Arabic for ease of use in the sector.
