Aircraft Financing Scheme LaunchUS-based Global Jet Capital (GJC) is a recently-launched leasing and lending company, initially funded with a $2 billion investment fund from AE Industrial Partners, GSO Capital and The Carlyle Group.

The company is now targeting an aircraft market, offering financing for business jets with a price tag of $30 million and upwards. A range of options will be available, including mortgage, finance leases, progress payments and mezzanine finance, which combines debt and equity.

Launched at the ABACE exhibition, GJC are aiming their financing options outside the US, where it expects the greatest uptake to be located. The company has noticed a surge in demand for this type of financing over the past three years, since banks and traditional finance companies have begun to shy away from jet financing.

Transactions are already being discussed for Gulfstream, Boeing and Bombardier aircraft.

Other Business Aviation Passenger Communications Solutions ProvidersGogo, business aircraft communications provider, announced the launch of a new service at the AEA International Convention & Trade Show this week. The ATG 1000 is a new system for connectivity that is aimed at the light private aircraft market, offering passengers the chance to use their own personal smartphones inflight for calls and texts.

Additional services such as web browsing, can be added using a software key, offering complete flexibility for operators wishing to provide basic services.

This new offering from Gogo joins the passenger communications revolution sweeping the industry as traveller demand increases for affordable, yet fast connection speeds.

Business jet owners and operators are seeking solutions for inflight communications on all levels from the cabin to the cockpit to enable streamlined operations.

Other inflight connectivity providers, such as Rockwell Collins’ ARINCDirect, offer passenger communications with high-speed broadband to give larger operators and charter companies the capability of an office-in-the-sky, almost a prerequisite in the modern cabin.

Latest Technology for Monitoring Cabin PressureA California-based aviation technology company have launched a new innovation for pilots to detect a possible cabin pressurisation failure in a bit to combat accidents caused by hypoxia. AltAlert, the personal cabin pressure monitor is a simple device that is small and easy to carry, able to be clipped to a belt, shirt pocket or attached to a window via a small suction cup.

The device gives both audible and LED visual alarms to warn the pilot that the cabin altitude is climbing above specified thresholds.

Based on a NASA patent, AltAlert has a battery life of 18 months and was developed using algorithms for consistency and reliability. Four years in development, the monitor is the project of president and CEO of Carlsbad, Stacy Pappas Sawaya, who researched hypoxic-related accidents. She said, “I started researching the number of accidents logged with the NTSB related to pressurization. The Payne Stewart accident was the most highly publicized, but the total number is enormous. It was really just a coincidence that the TBM 900 went down last September; we were finishing up by then. It was yet another example of the need for this device and its lifesaving capabilities.”

The AltAlert device is now publicly available to pilots at many pilot shops at a cost of under $400.

Business Aviation Summit Held in NYCThis summer will see JETNET LLC host its annual JETNET Global iQ Business Aviation Summit in New York City on the eve of the NBAA regional forum at Teterboro Airport.

JETNET iQ Director of Special Programs will chair the confirmed speakers list for the 5th year – a line-up that includes business aircraft OEM leaders, finance and sales experts, aerospace and defence analysts from Wall Street, UHNWI researchers, trade organisation directors and aircraft owners and operators.

GX Aviation Provides Aircraft Operators with Enhanced Cabin Services CapabilitiesHoneywell and Inmarsat have announced the successful completion of high-speed data performance tests of Jetwave MCS 8200 onboard aircraft hardware using the Inmarsat Global Xpress (GX) network.

Aimed at delivering high-speed aircraft WiFi to passengers, Inmarsat GX was tested for video streaming and file transfers at Honeywell’s UK facility in the West Country. The first GX satellite, launched last year is currently used for government and enterprise customers in the Indian Oceanic region, with a second satellite launched last month for the Americas and Atlantic region, and a third planned for later this year to cover the Pacific, GX aviation will eventually service and cover the entire globe, providing a seamless connectivity experience for passengers.

Honeywell and Inmarsat are delighted with the success of their testing and plan to commence higher data rate testing in the coming months.

Nicole Kidman New Etihad AmbassadorIn a bid to increase global awareness, Etihad Airways has announced the signing of Australian actress Nicole Kidman as their latest brand ambassador. Ms Kidman has featured in a video ad, part of which was filmed onboard an Etihad Airbus A380, and stills will be appearing in more than 130 countries around the world.

The campaign, launched this week, is aimed at raising global awareness and Ms Kidman was selected because, according to Peter Baumgartner, chief commercial officer for Etihad, “Nicole Kidman, as a globally respected artist, was the perfect voice and face for our story, and embodies worldly sophistications, intelligence, originality and elegance – values which form the foundations of the Etihad brand.”

Ms Kidman said she was impressed with the passenger services experience she had previously enjoyed with Etihad before joining the campaign. She said, “I loved doing it because I think The Residence is one of a kind, and it’s an apartment in the sky. I spent four days shooting on it and it still blows my mind that it is so big.”

Ms Kidman is not the first Australian actress to promote Etihad’s star Airbus, The Residence. Danii Minogue also worked with the airline last year.

All-You-Can-Fly Business Jet ServicesA growing sector of the business aviation market is promising to change the way corporate passengers travel, certainly in terms of the cost, this year with the introduction of the All-You-Can-Fly service.

Air travel clubs have been popping up across the U.S. in the past year, offering unlimited flights for a fixed monthly fee to club members. While these are generally not offered at the luxury end of the business market, club members can turn up to check in literally minutes before departure for internal, short-haul flights.

Texas Air Shuttle are amongst the latest companies to announce the service, which they hope to launch in Tulsa before the end of this year. The company will offer the use of a seven-seater King Air 200 aircraft and membership fees ranging between $2,850 and $4,900 per month, per person.

The service is expected to grow rapidly, after a positive explosion into the market in popularity and Texas Air Shuttle are determined to ‘turn the whole commercial air travel industry on its head’, with plans to introduce more than 40 destinations throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas by the end of 2018.

Other SATCOM Communications Providers for Business AviationA new system, launched by UAE satellite communications providers, Yahsat, has completed successful testing this week for their latest state-of-the-art aircraft satellite communications system for their client, Advanced Integrated Systems.

Including Ka-band airborne SATCOM, the new system promises an end-to-end solution. In a statement, Ali Al Hashemi, GM of YahService said, “At Yahsat, we strive to equip our customers with end-to-end satellite solutions that deliver the very latest in connectivity. The completion of the test with AIS exemplifies our commitment to bringing cutting-edge tools to our clients and constantly improving the speed and performance of our services.”

First Embraer Legacy 500 Delivered to AustraliaAn undisclosed customer in North Queensland, Australia is the first in the country to receive delivery of Embraer’s Legacy 500 business jet. Negotiated on behalf of the buyer by Norris Aviation Services, the midsize jet is believed to be used primarily for business purposes.

Australia’s CAA awarded type certification to the Legacy 500 only last month. ExecuJet will provide maintenance contracts for the new aircraft in Australia, in addition to the existing maintenance it has to support the Phenom 100, Legacy 600 and Legacy 650 clientele.

“The Legacy 500 is proving itself to be a very capable executive jet and well suited to the Australia market. It offers excellent field performance and easy transcontinental range,” said President and CEO of Embraer Executive Jets, Marco Túlio Pellegrini. “We are grateful for the confidence that this customer has placed in Embraer, and we are fully committed to supporting their operations.”

Flight Planning via iPad - Leading Providers

It has been announced that Florida-based Harris Corporation has been awarded a contract by the FAA to upgrade and manage the Alaskan GA flight services system that delivers flight planning and real time weather capabilities.

The 10-year contract, made up of three base years and seven one-year options, is worth a projected $98 million and will involve the implementation of Harris’ OASIS II program.

Under the contract, flight planning and real-time weather updates and briefing will be supplied to FAA flight service specialists in addition to handling NOTAMs messages.

OASIS II – Operational and Supportability Implementation System – will utilise System Wide Information Management (SWIM) in the National Airspace System (NAS) and will be the first consumer.
