Munich Airport has welcomed Lufthansa’s decision to base five Airbus A380s at the airport, which it says will boost capacity for long-haul routes and is a ‘future-defining move.’
Dr Michael Kerkloh, CEO at Munich Airport said, ‘This is a big day for Munich’s competitiveness in the aviation industry. This now firmly anchors our status as one of the major hubs in Europe.’ Speaking about the collaborative benefits of working with Lufthansa, he added, ‘We are now reaping the rewards of the very successful partnership of Lufthansa and Munich Airport in the joint operation of Terminal 2 and the new satellite facility.’
The move, which expands on the previous announcement from Lufthansa to station 15 Airbus A350s at the airport, is expected to improve premium services for passengers using the European hub, and will begin during the 2nd quarter of 2018.
This Friday marks the one-year anniversary of Concourse D at Dubai International Airport. Over the past 12 months, more than 115,000 flights have been handled by Concourse D, bringing almost 17,000,000 passengers through a state-of-the-art, integrated environment, packed with shops, restaurants, and lounges from British Airways, Qatar Airways and Lufthansa to name but three of the five new airline lounges.
Concourse D has also seen plenty of action musically, being the host location for Dubai Airports’ special events, such as Hang Out DXB, which offered surprises to passengers with discounts, games and prizes. The addition of Concourse D has significantly impacted the airports’ capacity, taking the number of annual traveller capability from 75 million to 90 million.
“Concourse D is the outcome of a well-designed and meticulously planned project that was built around the evolving needs and expectations of our customers – the hundreds of thousands of passengers that pass through our airport every day,” said HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of Dubai Airports and president of the DCCA (Dubai Civil Aviation Authority).
“After a successful first year of operations, it is very clear that Concourse D has achieved its goal of delighting our passengers and our business partners.”
It has been announced that a 2-year old memorandum of understanding between Air China and Lufthansa will be implemented at the beginning of the summer season of 2017 to provide jointly-operated flights in and out of China-Europe.
The joint venture will enable the two airline operators to collaborate more closely to increase the number of code-share flights and will also include subsidiaries of Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and Swiss International.
Carsten Spohr, of Lufthansa said, ‘This ground-breaking joint venture will fundamentally strengthen our competitive position on routes between Europe and China.’
Chairman of Air China, Cai Jianjiang said, ‘[The joint venture] is another major step of Air China’s globalisation strategy. We will further expand network coverage in China and Europe, enhance the flight connections in beyond markets and optimise flight schedules.’
Rockwell Collins’ new ARINC vMUSE mobile passenger processing platform will be launched by Lufthansa as they become the first airline to implement the technology.
This latest innovation in passenger processing promises to speed up the check-in process, which can be carried out by personnel on the ground using tablet devices, wherever they can get an internet signal and connection, even in the hotel foyer.
ARINC vMUSE mobile is based on an entirely mobile common-use passenger processing system (CUPPS) and is the first of its kind in the industry. Enabling cost-sharing and space-saving in the terminal, the solution paves the way for greater flexibility within the airport environment.
