Miracle on the Hudson pilot to speak at NBAA | Aviation industry newsEveryone remembers the day that Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger became widely recognised as the incredible ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ pilot, when he and his first officer, Jeffrey Skiles, skilfully brought their Airbus down safely, saving everyone on board, in the Hudson River six years ago.

Captain Sullenberger has been invited to speak about the experience at next month’s NBAA convention in Las Vegas, highlighting the significance of professionalism, leadership and preparedness training for aviation safety.

CPDLC Connectivity for Italian Airlines

Other NextGen Communications Technology ProvidersItalian ANSP, ENAV, has formed an agreement with SITA OnAir for the provision of VHF communications equipment in 19 Italian airports, including Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport Fiumicino.

This will allow airlines equipped with the technology, using Italy’s airspace, to access CPDLC via provision from ENAV.

CPDLC forms part of the NextGen SESAR initiative, enabling airline pilots and ATC to communicate using text, which improves the quality of operational communications, the safety of aircraft and the ATC management efficiency.

Find out more about Inmarsat | Business Aviation NewsInmarsat, the British satellite company that sprang into the headlines earlier this year when they aided the search for lost Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, have said that they have conducted tests that show the possibilities for tracking flights at 15 minute intervals without the need for elevated costs.

The tests, conducted with Qantas Airways and Virgin Australia, highlighted that current technology is capable of identifying aircraft positioning every 15 minutes, effectively supporting the ICAO plan to scrap current 30-40 minute reporting intervals.

Inmarsat suggested that 15-minute reporting intervals are possible without raising costs, creating a ‘good balance’ between monitoring requirements, limitations of the system installed and the cost of operation.

Information About HFDL & Providers | Aviation NewsThe US Army is funding a series of tests on systems that deliver secure voice and data communications after they received upgraded AN/ARC-231s.

In a significant milestone for the upgrade program, testing for certification comes at the culmination of the new EDM deliveries and the contract is worth $39 million.

The VHF/UHF multi-mode, multi-band communications systems, provided by Raytheon, will be tested to provide full cryptographic certification.

HFDL is a viable, proven alternative to SATCOM on long-haul routes and can ‘stand-in’ for VHF on short-haul flights. The upgrades will allow SATCOM networking without compromising the legacy systems for air-to-air and air-to-ground communications.

US DoD Announce SATCOM & Data Link Contracts Worth $880 Million

US Department of Defence Award Contracts | Business Aviation NewsTwo separate contracts worth a total of more than $880 million have been announced this week by the US’s Department of Defence, in addition to several other contract awards for ACARS, engineering and technical services, and implementation for the country’s Naval fleet.

The military communications systems contracts will involve no ‘up-front’ payment awards, with funds distribution for assignment as orders are individually processed.

ViaSat and Data Link Solutions are the biggest awards, and they will handle Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) and Low Volume Terminal (LVT) to ensure high-performance, secure and jam-resistant data and voice communications systems for the Navy, Army and Air Force.

Debris Found at Reunion Island is Confirmed as MH370 Wing Flap

Last night the French authorities confirmed the debris found on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion did indeed belong to the missing Malaysian Airlines MH370 Boeing 777, seventeen months after it tragically disappeared from radar.

In a press conference, the Malaysian Prime Minister said that he has ‘shared the pain of those who could find no comfort,’ and offered the families of the 239 passengers on board MH370 his ‘deepest sympathy and prayers.’

It is believed that the search for the flight recorder will now be shifted to include the area of the Indian Ocean where the wreckage has been found. There were reports last year from the Maldives Islands of sightings of a passenger jet flying low over the islands in the early hours of the day flight MH370 went missing.

As the ICAO official said last month, the case cannot be closed until the plane is found. Today’s news will hopefully bring the authorities a step closer to its conclusion.

ADS-B Equipage Mandate Privacy Proposals Explored by FAAIt has been a concern of business aviation officials that mode-S transponder transmissions can be tracked online and traced to the originator. Since most networking with ICAO addresses is now processed via the internet, reservations have been expressed throughout the aviation community and a working group was set up as part of the ADS-B Equip 2020 panel to investigate and discuss privacy concerns, and to put forward proposals for tight security for transmissions.

A white paper was delivered surrounding measures for proposed security for mode-S transponders this week and includes proposed development of the ability to change codes on a regular basis. This would involve the introduction of a privacy office to handle such changes. In the long-term, the FAA should explore encryption possibilities within the transponder itself.

The company was awarded STC for installation of CPDLC-FANS system on the Boeing 757-200, which includes an ICG Iridium satcom system, new ACARS and a cockpit voice recorder.

Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) and Future Air Navigation System (FANS) are set to become mandatory by 2020 as a part of the Single European Sky initiative, which will make the congested skies over Europe safer and more easily managed.

ESA Iris Programme Completes Phase One

Leading Providers of CPDLC for Commercial AviationAs a part of the Single European Skies ATM Research (SESAR) joint undertaking, the Iris Precursor Programme phase one completion takes Europe another step closer to its goal of creating the worlds most advanced air traffic management infrastructure.

Now, with phase one completed, another €7.6 million of funding will now be made available by the European Space Agency (ESA) and its partners to commence phase two, which will focus on the satellite network overlay.

ESA’s Iris Precursor Programme is operating in partnership with Inmarsat, the well-known British satellite company and will provide the means to streamline the current ATM system and allow aircraft to use Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) to its maximum efficiency, increasing safety significantly over Europe.
