British satellite communications network, Inmarsat, has announced the award of an ESA contract to develop the European requirements for next-generation aircraft communications and air traffic management.
Inmarsat will head a team constructed from more than 30 aviation industry companies to ensure operational efficiency for the program, which will focus on the improvement of data link communications using satellite technology.

A comparison of the proposed plans to reform the US ATC system has been conducted by the Department of Transportation Offices of the Inspector General (DOT OIG) and a new report has been issued highlighting the impact these are likely to have on the NextGen modernisation program.
A reform of the ATS structure in the US, due to the size and complex nature of its airspace – which is up to 2.5 times the size of that in the UK – could make the implementation of NextGen initiatives difficult.

CPDLC will revolutionise current aviation ATC, centralising these vital processes as the world’s air traffic increases. The NextGen initiative is designed to make ATC more efficient and will open up new tracks to further increase this efficiency.

Associated Air Center president, Mr James Colleary is pleased to announce what he refers to as a ‘significant industry accomplishment’, as his company are awarded supplemental type certification for an out-of-production Boeing aircraft.
The company was awarded STC for installation of CPDLC-FANS system on the Boeing 757-200, which includes an ICG Iridium satcom system, new ACARS and a cockpit voice recorder.
