US DoD Announce SATCOM & Data Link Contracts Worth $880 Million

US Department of Defence Award Contracts | Business Aviation NewsTwo separate contracts worth a total of more than $880 million have been announced this week by the US’s Department of Defence, in addition to several other contract awards for ACARS, engineering and technical services, and implementation for the country’s Naval fleet.

The military communications systems contracts will involve no ‘up-front’ payment awards, with funds distribution for assignment as orders are individually processed.

ViaSat and Data Link Solutions are the biggest awards, and they will handle Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) and Low Volume Terminal (LVT) to ensure high-performance, secure and jam-resistant data and voice communications systems for the Navy, Army and Air Force.

ADS-B Equipage Mandate Privacy Proposals Explored by FAAIt has been a concern of business aviation officials that mode-S transponder transmissions can be tracked online and traced to the originator. Since most networking with ICAO addresses is now processed via the internet, reservations have been expressed throughout the aviation community and a working group was set up as part of the ADS-B Equip 2020 panel to investigate and discuss privacy concerns, and to put forward proposals for tight security for transmissions.

A white paper was delivered surrounding measures for proposed security for mode-S transponders this week and includes proposed development of the ability to change codes on a regular basis. This would involve the introduction of a privacy office to handle such changes. In the long-term, the FAA should explore encryption possibilities within the transponder itself.

JetBlue Makes First New York – Havana Flight

Aviation Industry News | JetBlue flights to Havana from NYAs a part of recent measures to improve relations between Cuba and the U.S. JetBlue have made its first flight from New York to Havana, becoming the first American airline to serve this route since restrictions were lifted at the beginning of the year.

The airline plan to make this route a regular one with weekly flights planned between J.F.K. airport and Havana’s Jose Marti airport.

JetBlue hope that this move with only strengthen their reputation as they already provide a respected service to the Caribbean and have operated charter flights to Cuba since 2011.

Primarily used for long-haul and trans-oceanic flights, when VHF line of sight communications is insufficient, HFDL is a HF data link protocol, operated by ARINC as a GLOBALink ACARS service via a ground network of HF stations, whose coverage spans much of the Earth’s surface.

More robust than voice communications, HFDL transmissions are often used by the military and on board aircraft, HFDL integrates seamlessly with the flight management systems.

Recent developments in software for HFDL means that the service offers comparable message success rates to VHF and satellite datalink.

LABACE 2014 | Find out more about this year's business aviation exhibitionThe 12th LABACE, business aviation’s conference and exhibition, will be held at Conghonas Airport in Sao Paulo next month on 11th to 13th August, despite suggestions of a move to Campo de Marte airfield after the problems last year with the collapse of a hangar. It is expected that the location will be discussed this year, as a more modern exhibition centre is available.

According to the director general of the show’s organisers, ABAG, Mr Ricardo Nogueira, the show is not expected to be any bigger than last year, but still bigger than 2013, with an estimated 14,000 visitors.

Safety is going to be big on the agenda this year, in addition to access to airports for business jets.

Also, FOS can now be integrated with their ARINCDirect safety management tools, providing access to flight and fatigue risk assessment via the Pulsar Infomatics Aviation Fatigue Metre suite, giving users instant identification capabilities for fatigue ‘hot spots’ across a given operational schedule.

Brian Kruger, senior director of Applications and Services for Rockwell Collins said that the upgrades place a focus on ‘enhancing efficiency for flight departments’.

The latest version of FOS features enhanced mobile functionality with a touch-screen interface for users of tablets and smartphones.

South California Environmental Airspace Improvements – Draft Released by FAA

FAA Release Draft EA for Airspace ImprovementsIn a bid to improve efficiency and safety of the flow of air traffic in Southern California, the FAA and the US Dept. of Transportation have released a Draft Environmental Assessment (Draft EA) as a part of the Metroplex project, which proposes the replacement of a number of current air traffic procedures.

The replacement of conventional procedures with satellite-based solutions, in accordance with the latest NextGen system will include a roll-out over most of South California and will encompass six of the region’s major airports.

The FAA has released the Draft EA for public review and is inviting comments on the proposals.

Bahrain Joint Venture for IJM and MAE

Business Aviation NewsInternational Jet Management and Mena Aerospace have entered into a joint venture for the promotion, sale and co-ordination of chartered business jets in Bahrain, which will allow IJM to develop and expand its business into the Middle East.

The MENA subsidiary, MAE Aircraft Management, hold a Kingdom of Bahrain Civil Aviation Affairs-issued Aircraft Operating Certificate and are based at Bahrain International Airport in a private hangar facility.

By forming the partnership, IJM are looking forward to working with a locally respected aircraft management company to ‘achieve a strategy for mutual growth.’
