The latest innovations in cabin connectivity were shown and discussed, in addition to some incredible interior designs.

Airlines and service providers were asking new questions this year, leading us to believe that in-flight connectivity, as a relatively new requirement for the cabin, is climbing higher on the list of priorities for passengers.

Cabin and Flight Deck Connectivity for Chinese Aviation with Inmarsat and MCN

Inmarsat and MCN Cabin and Flight Deck Communications | Business Aviation NewsA joint venture has been agreed between British satellite company, Inmarsat, and Beijing’s Marine Communications and Navigation (MCN) to develop aircraft communications solutions for the cabin and the flight deck for the Chinese commercial aviation market.

Inmarsat’s latest offering, GX Aviation, will feature highly in the joint venture, providing in-flight connectivity solutions to give global coverage, as will SwiftBroadband-Safety (SB-S).

China’s aircraft passengers will soon be able to enjoy broadband at speeds comparable to the ground-based services, and will be able to use their personal mobile devices.

The agreement is expected to be finalised later this year.

Passenger Data Sharing Between UK and Ireland Steps Up

With nearly 4.5 million travellers moving between London and Dublin last year, just on flights, the air route can be marked as one of the world’s busiest.

The move is welcomed by groups who have campaigned for greater attention to this route, which has been cited as a possible route for extremists to travel before moving on to other territory.

Frances Fitzgerald, Acting Justice Minister, said, “It is a critical issue, not just for Ireland, but for all member states that they are in a position to strengthen border controls through the sharing of information on suspect passengers prior to their travel from one jurisdiction to another.”

As terror threats continue to increase across the world, API provision is becoming a growing requirement, enabling governments and border agencies to screen passengers in advance of travel.

This Departure Clearance Functionality was tested this week in Kentucky by Universal Avionics using their Cessna Citation 7.

Increasing efficiency is critical both on the ground and on the flight deck, and minimising flight crew workload, saving time and reducing costs are high priorities on the agenda of many an operator.

The functionality test recorded clearance delivery in just 22 seconds at the FAA tech centre, and Universal Avionics announce their testing as a success.

IFE Connectivity Content and Uptake Improving for Gogo Vision

The company, who supply IFE connectivity solutions for both business and commercial aircraft have admitted that a lot of its content does not get to airlines, as they offer many smaller, independent films and documentaries, and an opt-in functionality for passengers.

As passenger demand increases for cabin connectivity, providers are under pressure to provide superfast connection rates for live streaming. Other providers, such as Rockwell Collins’ Cabin Connect, also deliver the opportunity to operate IFE, and cabin connectivity for passengers and crew via a single installation, and satellite communications networks.

ARINC GLOBALink Contract Renewed by Air China

Air China also has Rockwell Collins’ comprehensive communications suites, including VHF, SATCOM and HFDL to ensure coverage over a diverse range of aircraft communications.

The contract renewal comes in line with the plans that Air China has for expansion of its international routes and fleet.

Swiss FIS Report Increase in API Data

advance-passenger-informationSwitzerland’s Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) has said that there has been a significant increase in Advance Passenger Information (API) during the last four years.

Their report, published earlier this month, notes an increase from 9,000 to approximately 1.5 million passenger data transfers of information for the advance screening of travellers using the country’s airlines.

The FIS handles the data for the use of the prevention of terrorism, both physical and cyber, and now screens all passengers arriving in Switzerland from designated countries using both commercial and charter flights.

The handling of personal passenger data should be carried out according to international standards, often via APIS, a world-recognised and accepted form of transmission. Providers of the Advance Passenger Information System are closely regulated and monitored to ensure regulatory procedures are maintained.

The company, who has also opened a new office in Dubai International Airport, is hoping to continue to expand and take on more employees this year.

Flight support services for business aircraft is a niche marketplace, but offers a critical service in a sector that generally does not have the backing of a flight operations department in the same way that the commercial sector does.

ARINCDirect, launched in 2003, was the pioneer of exclusive business aircraft support.

More about aircraft data link CPDLC | Business Aviation BlogAs a part of the NextGen initiative, the text messaging capabilities of aircraft data link – CPLDC (Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications) – are being hailed as the way forward in the bid to eradicate the use of voice communications for the transmission of critical aircraft communications such as weather data, position reporting and other ATC operational messages.

Under the new initiative, pilots will be able to ‘accept’ messaging over text, without the need to make a verbal or data-based response.

The NextGen initiative is designed to improve aircraft communications with the simplification of messaging, avoiding misinterpretation, and standardising messaging protocols on the flight deck.
